What $2 Can Buy You

With the exception of baby clothes, shopping for clothes at yard sales can be hit or miss. I scored this dress, brand new with the tags still on, for $2 recently. The woman selling it was pregnant with her 2nd child and I am guessing this was purchased as an Easter dress, but never worn. I promised I would wear the heck out of it and as you'll see, I ignored the white after Labor Day Law and wore it out that night.

Why I Prefer To Shop Secondhand

THE THRILL OF THE HUNT. That's it. Not because it's more economical or environmental or esoterical. I shop secondhand because I love to hunt, to dig & to rummage and there's absolutely nothing more satisfying than finding a gem in the midst of a great deal of rubbish.

I'm proud to say that I come from a lineage of secondhanders. My grandparents were antique dealers - professionals in the world of secondhand retail. My mother took me yard selling at an early age, waking me before it was light out so we could hit all the big sales before they were picked over. Trips to see family in Tennessee included so many flea market outings that I'm not sure what else my family there does in their free time.

I like to think of myself as a connoisseur of secondhand shopping. I can think of nothing in life that makes me more excited than the seconds leading up to walking into a thrift, consignment or antique store or pulling up to a yard sale or flea market.

(I really hope I create a protege.)
